Due to the rerouting of the Mississippi River, the haphazard cutting of oil and gas canals, and the intrusion of salt water, the barrier islands and land that once served to slow down hurricane force winds no longer exits. This puts the Tribal community at increased risk for storm surge and more intense winds.
Most of PACIT's traditional territory is not included in a levee system. Reach K is the last part of the Morganza to the Gulf to be finished. The estimated completion is 2023. Until that is completed, Pointe-au-Chien will continue to experience funneling of water into our community.
